Toronto Fashion Week

One of our first favourites of this fashion week is Martin Lim’s show, the Canadian brand designed by duo-couple Danielle Martin and Pao Lim. They were the big winners of the last Mercedez-Benz contest dedicated to emerging talents for all Canada. Their signature? Graphic dresses, their fetish item, very feminine and full of references to the 60’s, worn with ultra light second skin pants, made of white silk with zebra prints. For this winter collection, the duo took inspiration from French artist Daniel Buren’s creations, who mastered the art of erecting “columns”. Also new, the emergence of long and chic dresses in their collection, a new niche business the designers seem to want to explore, with brio…

New prominent tops…

Kendra Spears, Katryn Kruger, Jasmine Tookes, Kati Nescher, Nadja Bender, Ava Smith … A few months ago these names were totally unknown to the public, and then there was New York… London, Milan, Paris, and dozens of shows… After a few miles on high heels, their names came out as an evidence: tomorrow’s new top models were there before our very eyes.

Fashion Week in Paris: the highlights

What a great week was this last week of Parisian fashion! We loved the Chanel show, brilliant from every angle, including these amazing giant stalagmites that had invaded the Grand Palais. Balenciaga, an absolute must, again! Lanvin, congratulations to Alber Elbaz who celebrated his “10 years” as the head of the artistic direction. The highly anticipated return of Hedi Slimane at Yves Saint Laurent. Then also, the delicious silhouettes of Valentino, the magnificent collection of Felipe Oliveira Baptista (also artistic director of Lacoste), Katy Perry’s “Tye and Dye” faded blue hair (great trend among the stars) – not sure we like it, though… -, and then our favorite designer Isabel Marant, who fills us with joy with her super trendy looks, as always, and divinely “Effortless”. Paris: LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!

Paris shows…

We loved Balenciaga’s show: a great millesime with new wave evocations, infused with 80s and 90s touches. We loved everything there: the square volumes, the cashmeres glued on neoprene, the PVC strips, the thickness and the excessive statures, the prints and graphics from Star Wars. With a special crush for this jumpsuit with an inverted triangle shape, these puzzle dresses with asymmetries organized in broken lines, or, at the opposite, these items very close to the body, broken down in 3 different fabric/textures. Paris, capital of fashion? Just seeing Balenciaga: of course!

The &man: Iain Baxter&’s exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario

We had the great honour to preview last Tuesday the remarkable exhibition of Canadian artist Iain Baxter& at the AGO. Beautifully displayed, 50 years of his amazing work, from his very first animals drawings when he was studying zoology, to his current multimedia exploration through QR codes and Twitter. “I like jarring people in a healthy way, about the environment, about language”, artist says.

Stunning! A must go to!

Iain Baxter&: Work 1958-2011, AGO, Toronto, from March 3rd to August 12th.

Marni at H & M: the eclectic chic

Last Tuesday, a lot of pleasant surprises were waiting for us on the 10th floor of the new Trump Hotel in Toronto when we discovered the fruit of the new association between H & M and Marni.

We usually like Marni’s great graphic or ethnic prints, unusual or offbeat overlays, and the mix of special fabrics and bright colors. So when the Italian label, directed by Consuelo Castiglioni, partners with the Swedish giant, we love it! A fitted skirt suit with blue and purple dots prints, signature of the house, worn with a naïve drawings t-shirt underneath, a silk micro short to combine with striped knitwear leggings, or this blouse and golden silk pants outfit, this top mixing knit and patent leather. In a word, we love everything…

In stores on March 8th.

Douglas Copland at Daniel Faria’s Gallery: WE LOVE IT!

The Daniel Faria Gallery is pleased to present “ Welcome to the Twenty-First Century”, an exhibition of new work by Douglas Coupland.

“ I want to explore how it feels to be inside the 21st century brain as opposed to the 20th century brain,” says Coupland of his new show, one that examines how art and technology can decode the spirit of our age. Coupland’s fusion of paint with contemporary codes, vector graphics and text-based slogans challenge us to investigate how technology has advanced our lives while leaving us feeling empty. Simultaneously poignant and irreverent, Coupland’s work in this show meditates on the human condition and the natural world on many levels. Sublime reflections…
